The Story of Upfront Carbon
Whenever I buy anything nowadays, I can’t help but think about what it cost, in terms of carbon, to make.
Before I got into business for myself, I worked for quite a few years as a copywriter in Toronto ad agencies. When I began freelancing, I learned quickly it was helpful to be able to provide design and art direction services as well. Not long after that, I learned that quite a lot of people also wanted to know if I “did websites, too?”.
Like any good freelancer, I realized the best answer to any question that started with “do you do…” is usually, “Yes”. Yes to design projects, yes to website projects, yes to copyediting and proofreading projects, yes to helping you self-publish your book… and so on. Just…yes. I learned how to do all of those things, and when I couldn’t figure out a thing, I hired a fellow freelancer as a subcontractor and spread the love.
So that’s the work part of the work/life bit above 👆
Because we are, all of us, rather more than the sum of our work selves, I want to use the website that bears my name to share a few of the things that matter to me. Books, writing, reading, knitting, the climate crisis, a poem I read recently, a news article that resonated, a Substack I just started following, and so on.
So my plan is to share the work I’m doing and the life I’m doing via this website. Of course, not all of the life I’m doing (and not all of the work I’m doing, either, because let’s face it, most parts of work life and life life are pretty banal and not really worth sharing. Rather like the previous sentence, when I think about it…hmm.
Anyway. Onward. Below, the sharing begins.

An absolutely wonderful memoir/travelogue written by Dervla Murphy about her journey by bicycle from Ireland to India in 1963.
This is a book about climate that I almost didn’t read. I am so glad that I did.
The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada has been rescuing donkeys since 1992. I was absolutely delighted to design, build and provide copy for their new website.
Think Logisitics is a third-party logistics provider headquartered in Mississauga. I wrote the copy for this site.
