Copy and content examples

From beekeepers to big banks (I’ve written for TD and ING Direct), you name it, I’ve written for it. I get a kick out of writing persuasively, convincingly and—when it suits—conversationally, too. Check out a few examples of my work below. Then get in touch, if there’s something I can write for you.

Gardenstead.com

Working first as a senior writer and then head of content with Gardenstead, I got to do the most amazing thing—write, plan and conceptualize content about gardening. As a bona fide plant enthusiast, I couldn’t have imagined a more wonderful gig. It was a splendid position with a great company and an amazing team. We grew a lot of things together, including our community—which we nurtured to include more than 500K gardeners.

How to grow garlic

We created videos about how to grow many things. This is one of my favourites — could there be a more beautiful ‘how to grow garlic’ video?

Gardening and mental health

I wrote scripts for Gardenstead’s podcast, including this episode on how gardening supports mental health.
I wrote website copy for Gardenstead—page intros, descriptions, the works—plus, plenty of articles about gardening, too. The brand’s friendly tone and manner (imagine a chat with a fellow gardener over a garden fence) is right up my alley. Here are some samples of articles I wrote/podcasts I scripted for Gardenstead:

What is an urban farm?

Urban farms bridge the gap between farmland and city living. By making fresh produce available to residents, they can play a imporant part in mitigating the problem of food deserts in large urban centres.

Sustainable gardening, explained

Sustainable gardening is, essentially, gardening with plants that can grow in and contribute to a given environment, without supplemental soil, water, or added nutrients. In this episode of the Gardenstead podcast, we learned more from experts on the subject.

Help for houseplant growers

Aaron Deacon is the founder of BIOS Nutrients, and an amazingly knowledgeable person about gardening, houseplants and soil. His all-natural fertilizers and plant care products are superb.

Chudleigh's Apple Farm

I wrote a bunch of communication pieces for Chudleigh’s. But my favourites were these charming little coupons. Because why not use every opportunity you’re presented with to have a friendly conversation with your audience?

The Greenbelt Foundation

The Greenbelt Foundation works to preserve a vital swath of green space in Ontario. It was my pleasure to work on this piece, which detailed the vital importance of this enormous and precious area. Shown below are snapshots of a few of its pages.

Headwaters Health Care Foundation

Over the course of a few years, I wrote many (many!) ads, for the Headwaters Health Care Foundation. Because the government does not fund the purchase of new hospital equipment, there was an ever-present need to speak eloquently to the community and give resonant, relevant reasons to donate. Below, a few of my favourites from the Foundation’s multi-year newspaper campaign.

The Heritage Bee Co.

The Heritage Bee Co. is helping to save native Ontario bees, one colony at a time. The founder’s chance discovery of a colony of small cell bees on her property led to a thriving, genuinely good-for-the-earth business that’s full of truly good intentions, and good things. Like honey! Here are just a few pieces I had the pleasure to write for The HBC over the years.

Gears Bike Shop (group ride ads)

The assignment: write some ads to run on the Gears website inviting cyclists to a (very) casual group bike ride. The kind of group ride in which there’d be zero pressure to perform—but some level of pressure to enjoy being out in the world on a bicycle. My kind of bike ride, frankly.

A few more favourites

Some picks from over the years.
